The Kruger National park was first set up in 1898 by the President of the Transvaal, Paul Kruger. He had realised that the animals of the Lowveld needed to be protected, the area between the Sabie and the Crocodile Rivers was set aside for restricted hunting in 1844. His plan only fully came into effect in 1898 when he established the Sabie Game Reserve, this was later renamed “The Kruger National Park”
